Record turnout: 'Is the end of a gloomy era'
According to polling station polls, turnout in the Polish election was 72.9 percent. This represents a record and is higher than the turnout in the first free elections after the fall of communism, notes AFP.
Tentatively, the opposition took home the majority of the votes, although the ruling right-wing nationalist party Law and Justice has single-handedly won the most votes and says it wants to stay in power.
According to AFP, a change of government would mean a "huge change" in how the country has been governed for the past eight years. The news agency describes the result as surprising and the opposition, which had previously called the election "a last chance to save democracy", has declared victory.
Former Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who leads the Citizens' Coalition, has called the result the end of a bleak era.
- Democracy has won, he says according to AFP.
