Geotagged images show Russian advance around Avdijivka
Geotagged images show that Russia is making less progress south and north of the city of Avdijivka in Ukraine, the American think tank ISW writes in its latest report. The area has been subject to constant Russian attacks for several days.
The Kyiv Independent writes that the city is strategically important, as it is a stone's throw north of the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk. According to the Ukrainian newspaper, the Russians have been unsuccessfully trying to take over the city since 2014.
Some Russian sources state that Ukraine's built-up defenses still pose a major challenge, according to ISW. Sources also indicate that Russia's difficulties in obtaining necessary care are slowing down the offensive around the city.
The think tank writes that several Russian military bloggers fuel the "Kremlin's desired narrative", which states that the Ukrainian counter-offensive is over. But one blogger points out that it is too early to judge the counter-offensive and that it is unclear whether the attacks around Avdijivka will result in a larger Russian offensive.

Ukraine hard at work in the East: "Attacks with everything they have"
In the past five days, Ukraine has been heavily attacked on the roughly 100-mile-long eastern front, Reuters reports. On Saturday night, Russia struck the town of Avdijivka.
- They attack with everything they have, gunfire, artillery, rockets, grenades and aircraft, says Vitalii Barabash, head of Avdijivka's military administration, on national television.
The heavy Russian attacks have meant that rescue workers cannot operate in the area, making it difficult to determine how many people have been affected by the latest wave of attacks.
Olkesandr Syrskyj, commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, visited on Saturday the city of Kupyansk, about 25 kilometers north of Avdijivka, and stated there that the situation in northeastern Ukraine has "significantly deteriorated"
- The enemy's main objective is to surround Kupjansk and reach the Oski River.
