New move against corruption – Umerov gets new colleagues  

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed three new deputy defense ministers alongside Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who took office a month ago, Sky News reports. 

It is described as another way for Zelensky to show that he is taking action against corruption. Among the new names is Stanislav Haider, who comes from a managerial role at the country's anti-corruption authority.  

The new ministers are also said to be given important assignments with the goal of the Ukrainian defense reaching NATO standards, writes the Kyiv Independent.  

The former Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov was replaced after several corruption scandals within the defense.

Information that Russia is planning a base in Georgia  

Russia's navy is to set up a base on the coast of Abkhazia region in western Georgia. This is stated by the leader of the breakaway region according to AFP.  

Georgia expresses concern over the plans, which it describes as "a violation of Georgia's territorial integrity".  

The political status of Abkhazia is disputed. The region has declared independence, but Russia is one of the few states that has given its support.

After the attacks: Russia has moved Black Sea ships 

 

Satellite images show that Russia has moved about ten ships from its base at Sevastopol on the annexed Crimean Peninsula to other parts of the Black Sea, writes CNN. 

 

Images show several ships from the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the port of Novorossiysk, and CNN has managed to verify that several of them were recently in Sevastopol.  

 

At least one ship has also been moved to the eastern part of Crimea. In mid-September, Ukraine stated that it had succeeded in destroying two Russian ships, and barely two weeks later, the Black Sea Fleet's headquarters in Sevastopol were attacked.  

 

An analyst quoted by the Russian exile newspaper Meduza says that Russia has repeatedly moved ships from Sevastopol since the invasion began, only to be moved back.

Putin claims: No "external influence" in the plane crash  

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims there are no signs of "external influence" on the plane that crashed and killed Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and nine other people, several media reports. 

 

At a seminar in Moscow, he refers to the Russian investigators and says that shrapnel from hand grenades was found on the victims' bodies.  

 

Prigozhin died two months after the Wagner group's attempted uprising. The Kremlin has denied involvement in the crash, but several experts early on saw it as potential revenge. 

 

- Putin shows what the consequences can be for those who oppose him, said Russia expert Martin Kragh to SVT in August.  

 

American sources have stated that the plane was probably shot down, but the Pentagon later said that the United States had seen no sign of it.

Wagner used Chinese satellite data for operations  

 

A Chinese company sold two satellites to the Russian paramilitary Wagner group at the end of last year, according to documents seen by AFP. 

 

Images from the satellites are said to have been used as a basis for Wagner's operations in Africa and the failed uprising in Russia in June, a European security source told the news agency.
