250,000 Germans participated in demonstrations against the AFD
Around a quarter of a million Germans took to the streets on Saturday in about a hundred places in the country to demonstrate against the far-right party AFD, AFP reports.
In Frankfurt, 35,000 people marched under the slogan "Defend democracy - Frankfurt against the AFD". Similar numbers appeared in Hannover and Dortmund.
The protests were a reaction to the revelation that members of the party, which is the country's second largest in public opinion, attended a secret meeting with right-wing extremists to forge plans for mass deportations of immigrants in the event of a takeover.

Unusually cold winter weather in the USA - 83 people dead
83 people have died as a result of the unusually widespread cold that is currently affecting large parts of the United States, writes CBS News.
The cold hits many cities that are most unaccustomed to it, such as Memphis, Tennessee. There, so many water pipes have frozen to pieces that the water pressure has dropped throughout the city, AP writes.
According to the New York Times, 75 percent of the country's population is expected to experience freezing temperatures in the coming days, and in many places warnings for cold combined with strong winds have been issued.
Only in southern Texas, southern Florida and on the West Coast will the temperature stay steadily above freezing.
