Democrats' Plan: Save the Speaker for Ukraine Deal
Democrats in the United States are considering an unconventional plan to unfreeze frozen support for Ukraine: keep Republican Speaker Mike Johnson in office. This is reported by Politico.
Republicans have blocked Ukraine aid and are demanding strong measures to reduce the flow of migrants across the Mexican border to allow it back. Johnson is under intense pressure from the party's hardline phalanx not to give in to Biden and the Democrats — under threat of losing his job.
Therefore, several Democrats are now willing to help him stay in office if a deal is reached and the Republican right wing tries to oust him.
- Our job is not to save Johnson, but it would be a real shame not to support him if he were to do the right thing [...] so far he has been an honest negotiator, says member Bennie Thompson.
