The Israel-Hamas war|The attacks

Gaza Ministry of Health: 19 people were killed

Gaza's health ministry says at least 19 people were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes on a tent camp in Al-Mawasi, an area classified as a safe zone. This is reported by AP. According to the ministry, the number of dead may rise.

The figure is lower than that previously stated by the Gaza Civil Defense, 40 killed and 60 injured. Israel has claimed to have killed three senior Hamas figures and has disputed this morning's death toll.

Both the Ministry of Health and the Civil Defense are organized under the rule of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Ministry of Health's account of casualties is generally regarded as credible and has been subject to scrutiny in previous conflicts. The figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The devastation after the attack is great. Pictures show large craters and witnesses tell of a desperate search in the sand for missing people.

Three large craters, up to nine meters deep, are visible at the site. Now they are digging in the sand to find survivors. Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza's civil defense, told CNN that "whole families have disappeared in the sand."

Many are found dead.

- People were buried in the sand. They were picked out as body parts, says Attaf al-Shaar, who fled Rafah to the tent camp.

20 to 40 tents are said to have been completely destroyed. According to information from the Gaza Civil Defense, at least 40 are dead and 60 injured. In addition, about fifteen people are missing, according to AFP. Gaza's Ministry of Health later stated that 19 were killed but that the number could rise.
