Social problems in Zimbabwe

Food shortage in Zimbabwe – 200 elephants to be killed

Zimbabwe will kill 200 elephants this year due to food shortages as a result of the drought, reports AFP. In addition, the country believes that the shooting is needed to deal with a sharp increase in the elephant population.

The shooting is the first in the country since 1988.

There are around 100,000 elephants in the country, the second largest population of any single country, but culling animals to feed the population is met with criticism and is considered by many to be a short-term solution.

Criticism of the shooting: "Scares away tourists"

The decision to kill 200 elephants to curb the food shortage in Zimbabwe is facing criticism, writes AFP. Farai Maguwu, who works at an indigenous organization for the conservation of natural resources, warns that it is a short-term solution that can cause long-term problems.

- They risk scaring away tourists. The elephants are more valuable alive than dead, says Maguwu, who believes that the government should try to find more environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions.

About 42 percent of Zimbabwe's population lives in poverty, and about six million people are estimated to be in need of food aid from November to March, when food shortages are greatest.
