Extreme weather in Europe
Several dead and missing after heavy downpours in Europe

One person has died in Poland and four people are missing in the Czech Republic after storm Boris advanced in central and eastern Europe, writes AFP. On Saturday, five people were also reported dead in Romania.

In the Czech Republic, the heavy downpours have led to floods, so around 51,000 households in the northern parts of the country have been forced to evacuate, the BBC writes. In Poland's Glucholazy, the mayor has urged residents to evacuate to higher elevations due to flooding.

According to Zofia Owsiaka, a resident of Glucholazy, everyone in the town is scared, and there seems to be no "hope that the rain will stop".

- We are once again facing the effects of climate change, which is becoming more and more present on the European continent, says Romania's President Klaus Iohannis.

Firefighter in Austria dead after the floods

A firefighter in northeastern Austria has died in the floods that hit the country after storm Boris moved in with heavy downpours, AFP reports, citing a statement from local authorities.

"Unfortunately, a firefighter has died during an emergency in the flood," says Johanna Mikl-Leitner, mayor of the federal state of Lower Austria.

Several roads have been blocked off in the region and the authorities have warned that the situation will be tough even on Sunday. Even in the capital Vienna, houses have been flooded and some underground stations have been forced to close.
