The violence in Mexico

Murder wave in cartel stronghold after the arrest of leading figures

19 people have been killed in the Mexican Sinaloa region in just five days, Reuters reports. The region is home to the dreaded Sinaloa cartel and the recent violence is said to be the result of an internal battle between different phalanxes.

According to AP, many have expected a violent battle after the leaders Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez were arrested in the United States this summer. The latter is the son of the infamous drug lord "El Chapo", who is imprisoned in the United States.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has called on gang factions to act "responsibly" so that no more Mexicans are killed.

- They should also take care of themselves and their families.

The wave of murders in Sinaloa, Mexico, is terrorizing the region's residents. The violence is said to be part of an internal battle within the powerful Sinaloa cartel, and both the violence and the gangs' recruitment of young people are causing concern.

- My cousins have been locked at home. My aunt doesn't want them to go out because the criminals are recruiting people, says 27-year-old Estefania, who lives in the regional capital Culiacan.

This summer, the two leading figures "El Mayo" Zambada and his crony Joaquin Guzman Lopez were arrested. The current battle is said to consist of members standing on opposite sides of them.
