Terrorist threats

British spy chief: IS and al-Qaeda are back

The terrorist threat from the Islamist groups IS and al-Qaeda is increasing again. This is stated by the head of the British intelligence service MI5, Ken McCallum.

- After being thoroughly suppressed for a few years, they have resumed their efforts to export terrorism, he said during a press conference on Tuesday, according to Politico.

More than a third of the intelligence service's priority investigations into terrorist threats have connections to IS and other terrorist groups abroad, and more than one in ten suspects is a minor, writes CNN.

MI5 has also seen a sharp increase in threats from so-called hostile states, notably Iran and Russia. The intelligence agency says it has foiled 20 Iranian-backed terror plots since the start of 2022 alone that "posed potentially lethal threats to British citizens".

Norway raises terror threat level to 'high'

Norway raises the terror threat level from "medium" to "high", Norwegian media reports. The reason is supposed to be the threats against Jewish and Israeli targets.

"High" is the fourth terror threat level out of five possible in Norway.

- There are several negative conditions that have increased the terrorist threat, among other things related to the ongoing escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, says Eirik Veum of the Norwegian Security Police PST to NTB.

The new threat situation means that the security police assess that several people have "concrete and realistic plans" to carry out terrorist acts in the country.
