Political situation in Israel
Analysis: Legal and political chaos ahead of HD judgment
The Israeli politicians seem to be taking turns in the role of destroyer, writes Amos Harel in an analysis in Haaretz. Now the turn has come to Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana from the ruling Likud Party.
Ohana claims that the Supreme Court does not have the right to tear up constitutions - just as HD should let through or tear up the controversial legal reform that limits its own power in favor of the politicians.
The issue is legally tricky, writes Michael Starr in the Jerusalem Post, because there is a loophole in the Israeli system that lacks a constitution. He believes that both the government and the opposition have good arguments, but:
"Instead of cooperating, they jump down the rabbit hole together to see who survives."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would have been happy to compromise on the legal reform, writes Shalom Yerushalmi in the Times of Israel. That was clear in a draft settlement that was leaked at the beginning of the week and which involved a postponed and softened reform.
But, he writes after the plan was denied by everyone, both Netanyahu's friends and enemies have a greater interest in letting him fall.

North Korea: We have developed submarine for nuclear weapons
North Korea claims to have built a submarine capable of carrying nuclear weapons. It was unveiled by dictator Kim Jong-Un during a ceremony on Thursday.
The submarine has been named Hero Kim Kun Ok and, if the claims are true, represents a new chapter in the development of the country's navy. According to Bloomberg, the submarine is believed to be an upgrade of a Soviet Romeo-class submarine, which North Korea bought from China in the 1970s.
- It is heavily modified but is based on Soviet technology from the 1950s and will therefore inevitably have limitations, says analyst Ankit Panda to AP.
