According to the US, the Chinese pilot must have flown uncontrolled fast next to the US bomber.
"We fear that the pilot was unaware of how close he was to causing a collision," the military wrote in a statement.
China's Foreign Ministry is striking back, accusing the US of "flexing its muscles on China's doorstep" by flying over the South China Sea.
