The US Supreme Court introduces ethical rules for judges
The US Supreme Court announced on Monday that it had introduced ethics rules for its nine judges after several scandals surrounding luxury gifts and trips some of them received, reports AFP.
The HD judges were previously the only ones in the federal justice system not subject to formal ethics reviews. This has, according to a statement from the judges, led to "misunderstandings" that they consider themselves to be above ethical rules.
"For the most part, these rules and principles are nothing new," the judges write, adding that the new code of conduct primarily means that the guidelines they have long followed now become formal.
The announcement comes seven months after the journalist network ProPublica revealed that HD judge Clarence Thomas for several years allowed himself to be offered luxury trips by a Republican billionaire. In June, they also made a similar revelation about Judge Samuel Alito.

The election in Poland
New Polish president - but the change of power was blocked
The Polish pro-EU opposition won a minor victory when their candidate Szymon Holownia was named the new speaker of the lower house of the Sejm when it reconvened today after the election, AP reports.
However, there was no change of power when President Andrzej Duda, who belongs to the right-wing Law and Justice party, did as he had previously announced and tasked the party leader and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki with the task of trying to form a government.
When Morawiecki in a speech to the members expressed a desire to form a government across party lines, he was met with derision.
Law and Justice became the single largest party in the October 15 election, but the opposition coalition - led by former president Donald Tusk - won the most seats, and is expected to eventually take power.

The election in the Netherlands
The Netherlands' trending word in the election: Bestaanszekerheid
It's getting close to elections in the Netherlands and during the election campaign the word "Bestaanszekerheid" has been very popular. This roughly means security of supply, writes the EU Observer.
Although the country is economically prosperous, rising energy, food and housing costs have affected many residents.
- What is important and positive is that many more political parties, and not just the left-wing parties, are aware that people's social welfare is threatened, says Patrick Fey, board member of the union umbrella organization CNV.
The election will be held on November 22.

Political situation in Greece
Crack in the Greek left - "heavyweights" in mass defections
A deep rift has emerged in the Greek opposition party Syriza since Stefanos Kasselakis was somewhat unexpectedly appointed as the new leader of the left-wing party in September. This is reported by Politico.
Dissatisfaction is great among a particularly left-leaning phalanx that has now decided to leave the party entirely. Among the 45 people who drop out are "heavyweights" such as the former finance minister Euclid Tsakalotos.
According to AFP, the criticism concerns the fact that Stefanos Kasselakis, who has a background at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, is considered to be bringing the party more towards the middle of the political scale. In an open letter, the phalanx goes even further and writes that he stands for a "right-leaning populism" and hatred of the history of the left.

Erna Solberg: I will continue as party leader for Høyre
Erna Solberg will remain as party leader for the conservative party Høyre. She will thus become the party's candidate for prime minister in the 2025 election, Norwegian media write.
- I am fully motivated, perhaps more motivated than in a long time, to continue being Høyre's party leader, she says at a press conference.
There has been a storm around Solberg since it became known that her husband Sindre Finnes engaged in secret stock trading during the time that Solberg was Norwegian prime minister.
