Voter turnout of under 20 percent in Madagascar
Fewer than one in five registered voters went to vote in Thursday's presidential election in Madagascar, reports AFP.
The preliminary data comes from the electoral commission, but the Reuters reporter was also able to note that few people went to the polling stations, especially in areas dominated by the opposition which called for an election boycott.
Daily wage earner Rija Ralijaona was one of those who, after all, queued at a polling station at dawn.
- I expect the next president to create jobs for young people, she tells Reuters.
Incumbent President Andry Rajoelina is seeking re-election for a third term, but critics say he should be disqualified because he also holds French citizenship.

The opposition in Madagascar: "We do not recognize the election"
The ten opposition candidates who have boycotted Thursday's presidential election in Madagascar do not recognize the election, one of them told AFP.
- We do not recognize the election and neither do the majority of the people of Madagascar, said Hajo Andrianainarivelo at a press conference after the polls closed on Thursday evening.
Under 20 percent of registered voters went to vote on Thursday, according to preliminary data from the electoral commission.
The opposition has promised to continue the protests that have been going on for weeks "until a fair election is held", writes AFP.
