Open AI's major owner and closest partner Microsoft found out that CEO Sam Altman was fired just a few minutes before the news was released yesterday. This is reported by several media.
According to information to Axios, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was surprised by the announcement and a Bloomberg source states that he became "furious". The New York Times writes that Altman's departure is a setback for Microsoft, which has invested around $13 billion in Open AI and now has an ownership stake of 49 percent.
In a blog post, Nadella writes that the collaboration between the companies will continue and that Microsoft remains "dedicated to the partnership".
Exactly why Altman was fired is still unclear. According to The Economist, an Open AI employee calls the event a "coup d'état" or coup d'état, something that the company's co-founder Ilya Sutskever denied in an internal meeting.
