The US remains “remains neutral” on the issue of the Falkland Islands, the US State Department says.

The move comes after reports of a re-evaluated view of the archipelago.

This week, reports emerged that the US is sketching out ways to punish NATO countries that have chosen not to help the US in the war against Iran, according to Reuters. Among other things, a re-examined view of Britain’s control over the Falkland Islands is mentioned.

Now the US State Department claims that the country’s position remains firm.

– Our stance on the issue of the islands remains neutral. We are aware that there are conflicting claims between Argentina and Britain, says a spokesperson.

The United States has so far chosen to recognize British administration of the islands, without taking a position on sovereignty.

Argentina and Britain have long had different views on which country the archipelago belongs to.
