Heatwave in India

Heatwave in India causes schools to close early

An ongoing heatwave in India has prompted authorities to issue weather warnings for several days, writes India Today.

This mainly applies to the northwestern and central parts of the country with temperatures between 40 and 47 degrees. According to the AP, it is clearly above normal for the season. In some cases, the temperature has reached over 48 degrees.

The heat has meant that streets and markets are empty during the hottest hours of the day and schools have closed earlier than planned, writes The Independent.

More people seek medical attention in the heat: “Headaches and dizziness”

The heatwave in India has led to more people visiting hospitals, writes India Today. According to the newspaper, between 200 and 300 people in the city of Banda are affected by heat-related illnesses every day.

“Hospitals are seeing a sharp increase in patients, mainly with stomach pain, vomiting, fever, headache and dizziness,” says doctor Vineet Sachan.

According to the AP news agency, there is likely a large undercount.

Climate scientist Anjal Prakash tells the AP news agency that India is following the global pattern, with rising temperatures as a result of climate change.
