A third of the year has been 1.5 degrees warmer – the record already broken
Around a third of all single days in 2023 have had a global average temperature that has been at least 1.5 degrees higher than pre-industrial levels, an analysis by the BBC shows.
So far this year, 86 days have been at least 1.5 degrees warmer, which compares with the previous record from 2016 when 75 days throughout the year exceeded 1.5 degrees.
- That we reach this 1.5 degree deviation, and for longer periods of days, is worrying, says researcher Melissa Lazenby at the University of Essex.
When world leaders gathered in Paris in 2015, they signed a UN agreement to keep the global temperature increase "well below" 2 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels and also to do everything to keep it below 1.5 degrees.
