One million demonstrate in Poland: "Biggest ever"
In the central parts of Warsaw, around one million people have gathered to protest against the conservative ruling Law and Justice (PIS) party. This is reported by several media.
- This is by far the largest demonstration in Warsaw's history, Monika Beuth, spokeswoman for the city, told AFP.
The demonstration - dubbed the "march for a million hearts" - has brought together protesters from all over the country.
- When I see these hundreds of thousands of smiling faces, I have a good feeling that we are facing a breakthrough in the history of our homeland, says opposition leader Donald Tusk during a speech during the demonstration.
Parliamentary elections will be held in Poland on 15 October. Tusk's party, the Citizen Platform, is a few percentage points behind PIS in opinion polls.
