Barges stranded - threatening grain deliveries
Drought in the Amazon threatens grain transport in the Brazilian state of the same name, Reuters reports.. A barge with three trucks and 2,000 gas containers has run aground in the Rio Negro River due to low water levels.
Several grain companies, such as Cargill, Bunge and Amaggi, are still continuing their deliveries via the Madeira River, but the boats are being loaded lighter than usual as a safety measure.
At the same time, the shipping giant Maersk has informed its customers that it will not be able to continue its transports in the area around the city of Manaus.
"The depth at the most critical points of the Amazon River has reached a level that makes maritime work in Manaus impossible," the company states.
300,000 people in the state of Amazonas are affected by the drought.
