The UN chief appeals to Israel to back off on evacuation
UN chief António Guterres is appealing to Israel to reconsider and withdraw its evacuation order affecting 1.1 million people in northern Gaza. Guterres himself writes that in the New York Times.
"Any demand for a mass evacuation at extremely short notice could have devastating humanitarian consequences."
He states that the area is already besieged and that many people lack access to fuel, electricity, water and food. Roads and other infrastructure have been destroyed in Israeli counterattacks. In addition, almost half of the residents of Gaza are under the age of 18. All in all, such an evacuation is "almost impossible", writes the UN chief.
In the text, Guterres tries to understand the situation of both an Israeli Jew and a Palestinian in Gaza. His conclusion is that Hamas's attacks on Israel were horrific, but that the answer cannot be to collectively punish the Palestinian people.
"Civilians on both sides must be protected," he writes.

IDF: Evacuation deadline extended to 4pm - "safe movement" promised
The Israeli Defense Forces, the IDF, will allow "safe movement" for residents of Gaza moving south into the area, an IDF spokesperson writes on Platform X.
"For your safety, take advantage of the short time to move south," writes spokesperson Avichay Adraee.
The announcement means that the deadline for evacuation that Israel previously announced is being extended. Movement is permitted on two major roads between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, local time.

Dead hostages found in Israeli ground raids in Gaza: "This is just the beginning"
The Israeli army has carried out ground raids in the Gaza Strip during the night, international media reports. Sky News writes that the soldiers have found human remains of people who were taken hostage by Hamas in the terrorist attack a week ago.
At the same time, the Israeli Defense Force confirms, according to The Guardian, that more than 120 people are being held hostage by Hamas.
The ground raids began on Friday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying in a speech that the offensive will continue until Hamas is defeated:
- I want to emphasize that this is just the beginning. Our enemies have only begun to pay the price, he says.
