Filippinsk journalist sköts till döds i livesändning
Filipino journalist shot dead on live broadcast
A Filipino journalist was shot dead in his home on the southern island of Mindanao today. 57-year-old Juan Jumalon, also known by his alias DJ Johnny Walker, was reportedly shot in the head during one of his live broadcasts, the Manilla Bulletin reports.
The perpetrator allegedly entered Jumalon's home and studio by claiming to be a listener who wanted to make a statement on air.
"An unidentified person entered and for no apparent reason drew his weapon and shot the victim," the police write in a report according to the newspaper.
The Philippines is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists. According to Reuters, 199 people have been murdered since the democratization of the country in 1986.

"Attacks against journalists will not be tolerated"
Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. condemns the killing of 57-year-old journalist Juan Jumalon, who was shot dead during a live broadcast at his home in the southern Philippines today. The Manila Times reports.
"Attacks against journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will have to face the consequences of their actions," writes the president in a post on X.
The president's "special strike to protect the freedom of the press" requires the local police agency to establish a special investigative team to solve the murder. State investigators have also reportedly begun reviewing the case.
Philippine press freedom is legally strong, but the country is still considered one of the most dangerous for journalists. The country is in eighth place, from the bottom, in terms of convictions for suspected murderers of journalists.
