Dismal record number: 1,161 natural disasters in Brazil
1,161 natural disasters hit Brazil last year - the highest number since statistics began to be kept in 2011, writes AFP.
At least 132 dead, 9,000 injured and 74,000 people forced to leave their homes. This is the summary from the Center for Natural Disasters in São Paulo.
It is mainly about floods and landslides. The financial cost is estimated to have been the equivalent of just over SEK 10 billion.
Climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon are described as strong explanations for the development.

Large amounts of rain in the south - historic drought in the Amazon
It is mainly landslides and floods that have caused Brazil to reach a new record number for the number of natural disasters in one and the same year, but in some parts of the country it has been a matter of prolonged drought.
Historic drought has, among other things, affected the state of Amazonas.
- The volume of rain has been much greater than normal in the south, and less in the north and northeast, says Regina Alvala, head of the country's Center for Natural Disasters, to AFP.
In 2023, the country was hit by 1,161 natural disasters, the highest figure in the twelve years that statistics have been kept.
