Violence against women in India

Government of India: Extremely tough to criminalize marital rape

Criminalizing marital rape would be "excessively harsh", says the Indian government when the issue is being discussed in the country, according to CNN. In the statement, the government states that it is "disproportionate".

The government's written statement is the clearest to date on the issue of domestic rape. At the same time, the government states that men do not have a fundamental right to sex, but that there are sufficient laws to protect married women from sexual violence, writes the BBC.

Proponents of criminalization are not surprised by the statement, but believe that it means a "step back" for the women in the country who already live in a deeply patriarchal society with a lot of sexual violence.

"Shows that sexual violence is part of being a woman"

The Indian government's statement that it would be "excessively harsh" to criminalize marital rape is not surprising, says gender researcher Ntasha Bhardwaj for CNN.

- We have normalized that sexual violence is part of being a woman in our country.

At the same time, she believes that it is a "step back" for the women in the country who already live in a deeply patriarchal society with a lot of sexual violence.
