Ambassador recalled by France: "Must end"

France has summoned Israel's ambassador to the country after UN forces in Lebanon were shelled on Friday, AFP reports. In a statement, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands answers to what has happened.

"These attacks constitute serious violations of international law and must stop immediately."

The prime ministers of Italy and Spain say that what happened is unacceptable.

- It is completely unacceptable and we demand an end to all the violence that the "blue helmets" (UN peacekeeping forces ed. note) unfortunately suffer from, says Spain's Pedro Sanchez.

Israel admits the incident but says that Hezbollah soldiers are active in the area and that the UN post was hit by mistake.

US-made ammunition was used in the Beirut attack

American munitions were used in the Israeli airstrike that killed 22 people in central Beirut on Thursday night, according to an analysis of shrapnel found at the site, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper has found components manufactured by Boeing that make it possible to precisely control so-called "dumb bombs". The attack is the deadliest in the city since shelling between Israel and Hezbollah began a year ago.

The ammunition has been used frequently by Israel in Gaza, but this is the first time since 2006 that US-made ammunition has been used centrally in Lebanon's capital.

Security sources told Reuters that the target was Hizbollah top Wafiq Safa, who survived the attack.
