The threat to the Amazon

Report: Important progress against deforestation in the Amazon

Deforestation in the world has gotten worse. This is stated by researchers in the report "Forest Declaration Assessment", which was published on Tuesday. The pledge to end deforestation by 2030, which 140 leaders from around the world made in 2021, looks set to be broken.

- We are only six years away from a critical global deadline to stop deforestation and forests continue to be cut down, destroyed and burned at an alarming rate, says lead author Ivan Palmegiani according to AFP.

At the same time, the report shows that Brazil, the country in the world with the most deforestation, is making important progress.

The situation in the Amazon has "improved significantly" and measures introduced by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his government have had an effect.

Brazil warns: Risk of food shortage due to drought

The city of Manaus in northern Brazil, home to just over two million people, is at risk of suffering from a shortage of fresh produce due to the drought, reports Sweden's Radio Ekot. Authorities in the country warn that the tributaries of the Amazon cannot be traveled on because they are too shallow.

Goods are usually transported by water, but must now instead be transported 800 kilometers via an unpaved road, according to the radio.

The drought is believed to be due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, climate change and intense fires that lead to deforestation.
