After nine days: Two found alive in tunnel in Nepal

Two people have been found alive in a hydroelectric tunnel in Nepal, more than a week after the devastating landslide. This is reported by Reuters and AP.

At least 1280 people have been confirmed dead, and another almost 6000 are still missing.

Rescue workers told Al Jazeera on Friday that there was some hope of finding survivors inside the tunnel in question, whose entrances have been blocked but which is not believed to have been completely flooded.
 

The foreman's first question: "What day is it?"

The two workers who were rescued from the mud-filled tunnels in Nepal have been taken to hospital, writes The Guardian.

They were both found 170 meters into the tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric power plant, writes CNN.

Foreman Sanjay Sah's first question when he was rescued from the tunnel was: "What day is it?"

He says he was trying to get everyone else out when the floods hit.

"That way I lost time. In the end, I didn't have time to get out myself," Sah tells The Guardian.

To keep his spirits up, he repeated Hindu mantras.

Foreman Kabir Maharjan is the second person found alive, his condition is described as critical. His wife Hirashovs is now on her way to the hospital.

"We could barely eat or drink for ten days. We were very scared. Now we are all happy," she tells the BBC.
