Syria destroys chemical weapons from the al-Assad era
Syria has begun destroying the country's chemical weapons stockpile, which is a remnant of the regime of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad.
- We have begun the first destruction process since we were liberated from the previous regime, says Syria's UN Ambassador Ibrahim Olabi at a meeting of the Security Council on Thursday.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) stripped Syria of its voting rights in 2021 after it was determined that the then regime was behind sarin and chlorine gas attacks on the country's population during the civil war.
But after the fall of al-Assad, the new regime led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa has promised to cooperate with the OPCW and destroy the remaining chemical weapons stockpiles.
“Our goal is to protect the Syrian people so that such weapons do not fall into the wrong hands,” says Olabi.
