New alarms in Germany – suspected sabotage attempt
German police are investigating more suspected attempts to sabotage the electricity grid.
A police operation is underway at a transformer station near Bremen – just hours after suspicious objects were found at a transformer station in Dormagen, according to German media.
Early on Friday, police were called to a transformer station in Ganderkesee near Bremen in the federal state of Lower Saxony. The station has been cordoned off, but according to the police there is no danger to the public.
Hours earlier, late on Thursday, passersby discovered objects at a transformer station in Dormagen between Cologne and Düsseldorf, reports Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).
– So far, no damage has been caused. It is also unclear whether this had the capacity to cause any damage, police spokeswoman Claudia Suthor told WDR.
According to German media, it is some type of launching or firing device for homemade rockets, as well as timers and copper wire. A spokesperson for the Cologne police told Bild that “someone has deliberately tried to cause a short circuit”. The whole thing is said to be investigated as suspected sabotage.
Earlier this week, there was a power outage at a transformer station for a lignite-fired power plant in Bergheim, just a few miles from Dormagen. Cables had been laid on top of the power lines to cause a short circuit.
A similar incident also occurred on the other side of the country, when similar homemade equipment was found at a transformer station in the eastern state of Brandenburg. The station is connected to Jänschwalde, one of Germany’s largest coal-fired power plants.
On Wednesday, German police announced that the latter incident was being investigated as a possible terrorist attack.
