Prince William has started a unique project for the homeless.

Next year, 24 homes will be ready for people who are homeless in Cornwall to move into.

- This is a matter of priority for British royalty, says court expert Sara Ericsson in the "Kungligt" podcast.in ”Kungligtpodcast.

Prince William has been involved in the plight of the homeless for many years. In 2023, he started the "Homewards" campaign, which will last for five years to remedy homelessness.

- In a modern and progressive society, everyone should feel safe and have a safe home, be treated with dignity and receive the support they need, the prince said in a statement at the time.

One of the initiatives is a housing project where the prince has 24 homes built for the homeless in the town of Nansledan, which is located in the prince's duchy of Cornwall. The first houses should be ready in autumn 2025. They are being built together with the charity St Petrocs.

The residences are described as high-quality temporary accommodation that should feel like home for the residents.

The commitment existed for a long time

Representatives of the duchy write in a press release that it is the lack of rental properties that is considered to be the biggest reason for increased homelessness in Great Britain. The residents must also receive help with education and jobs in order to get out of homelessness.

The commitment to the homeless has long existed within the British royal family. William's mother, Princess Diana, became very involved in the issue.

- So does William's father, King Charles. Through his charity, he has created a food project where it is ensured that food waste from restaurants is taken care of and distributed to the homeless, says Sara Ericsson.

In December 2011, Prince William tested what it's like to be homeless. He spent the night on the street in central London with his private secretary and a charity representative.

- I can't, after just one night, even begin to try to understand what it's like to live as an outcast on the streets of London night after night, he told the Daily Mail.
