WHO Director-General on site at the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak
World Health Organization WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has arrived in the Ebola-hit Ituri region of Congo-Kinshasa.
Ghebreyesus is expected to visit treatment centers in the city of Bunia and meet local authorities, health workers and families affected by the infection.
– That's why we are here, to discuss with the community and to see how things are developing and if there are any challenges to help with, he told reporters.
The infectious disease has spread to at least three regions in the country and in neighboring Uganda.
At least 1,077 suspected cases have been identified in Congo-Kinshasa since the outbreak was confirmed in mid-May, including 246 deaths, according to the African Union's disease control agency, Africa CDC.
