The conflict in Iraq
USA: The attack on the base was extremely serious
The United States takes yesterday's attack on the Ain al-Asad air base in Iraq "extremely seriously," says White House Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, according to AFP.
- It was a very serious attack, with ballistic robots that posed a genuine threat, he says.
The US will respond to the attack, which killed an Iraqi soldier and wounded several Americans, he added.
US forces in Iraq have been attacked dozens of times since October. Most of the attacks, including yesterday's, have been carried out by a loosely-knit Iran-backed Islamist group in retaliation for US support for Israel.
