Ukraine's spy chief: New mobilization is inevitable
Ukraine's intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov enjoys near-mythological status among many Ukrainians, who share memes of him on social media whenever military equipment is sabotaged in Russia or on occupied territory.
It has its price – Budanov has survived ten assassination attempts, and his wife has been poisoned with heavy metals. Despite this, he is determined to continue operations behind enemy lines, he says in an interview with the Financial Times.
Regarding the ongoing counter-offensive, he is pragmatic:
- To say that everything is going well is a lie. To say it is a disaster is also a lie.
Like many in the Ukrainian leadership, Budanov sees a new mobilization as absolutely inevitable for the continued war effort - "the lack of personnel is palpable," he says.

Rats invade Ukraine's trenches - sick soldiers bleed from eyes
Conditions reminiscent of World War I prevail in Ukraine's trenches, CNN reports. It's teeming with rats and mice, and diseases are spreading that make soldiers vomit and bleed from the eyes.
A soldier nicknamed "Kira", who fights in southern Zaporizhzhya, estimates that there are around a thousand mice in the trench she shares with three other soldiers.
- Imagine that you go to bed and a mouse crawls into your trousers or your shirt, chews on your fingertips or bites your hand. You get two or three hours of sleep if you're lucky.

Russia: NATO exercise part of hybrid warfare
NATO's upcoming Steadfast Defender military exercise represents a "return to the ranks of the Cold War," claims Russia's Acting Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, according to Reuters.
Earlier this week, it was clear that Sweden will participate in the exercise, which will include approximately 90,000 soldiers. The scenario to be trained on is an attack on NATO from the east.
- These exercises are another element in the hybrid warfare from the West against Russia, says Grushko to the Russian news agency RIA.
According to the think tank Institute for the study of war, Russia has recently turned up its rhetoric against NATO, and is working hard to portray the upcoming exercise as a provocation.
