The Fed vs Inflation
Hope for a major reduction is alive – the interest rate announcement a shocker

Wall Street traders have not given up hope of a "double rate cut" from the Federal Reserve next week. After largely writing off the possibility in recent days, the market is now again pricing in a 30 percent chance of a 50-point cut, Bloomberg writes.

The trigger for the change in odds was an article in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday that Fed members are faced with the choice and the test of whether to start their rate cuts big - or gently.

"If pricing remains as it is right now, it would be the first meeting in years where there is serious uncertainty around the interest rate decision," wrote Deutsche Bank analysts.

The Maldives' coffers are empty - soon unable to pay interest

The Maldives could become the first nation in the world to default on a Muslim form of bond, called sukuk. The country is now looking for bailouts to prevent ending up in state bankruptcy, writes the Financial Times.

Joshua Loud, emerging market manager at Danske Bank, states that it is difficult to understand what effect it would have, as it has never happened before.

Sukuk do not use traditional interest rates, but instead offer lenders a share of the profits from an underlying financial instrument. But in the case of the Maldives, government finances are extremely strained. This is because the country took billions in loans from India and China to cover deficits in the past. There, the interest payments are completely draining the country's reserves.

- The reserves are down to a critically low level, says George Xu of the credit rating agency Fitch Ratings.

Trump's crypto partner: "Can sell crap with a good story"

Donald Trump and his sons have been promoting their new crypto platform "World Liberty Financial" in recent weeks. Participating in the investment is a man with a to say the least motley sales background, writes Bloomberg.

Chase Herro, 39, has sold everything from cannabis to weight loss pills that are supposed to "cleanse the intestines". He has previously said in videos that you "can literally sell crap in a can, covered in pee and human skin, for several billion dollars if you only have the right story", writes the news agency further.

Herro now stands as chief strategist of the Trump family's crypto project, while son Barron Trump, 18, is chief visionary.

The Trump family's big launch of the crypto platform is expected to take place on September 16.

Chinese economy
Expert: Happening everywhere – and China's situation is tougher

Countries around the world need to raise the retirement age. This is what health expert Yanzhong Huang told the AP news agency after the announcement that the Chinese government intends to raise the retirement age gradually over the next 15 years.

He says that other major economies, such as the United States, are also undergoing major demographic changes and that the population is getting older.

- But in China, the challenge is much greater.

At the end of 2023, 300 million inhabitants were over 60 years old. By 2035, the group is believed to have grown to 400 million people.
