"NATO could have done more to prevent the war"

NATO could have done more to equip Ukraine in an attempt to prevent Russia's full-scale invasion of the country in 2022, says outgoing NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg in an interview released today according to Reuters.

- Now we provide military equipment for a war - then we could have provided military equipment to prevent the war, he says to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Stoltenberg highlights NATO's reluctance to supply Kyiv with the weapons it requested before the full-scale invasion due to fears of increasing tensions with Russia. But after 2022, Ukraine, which is not a member of the defense alliance, has received weapon system after weapon system to fight Russia.

The NATO chief also tells the newspaper that he believes that the only way to end the war is through negotiations.

No new decisions on Ukraine after Starmer-Biden meeting

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Joe Biden are postponing the decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons against targets inside Russia, the BBC reports. According to Starmer, the parties had a "broad discussion about strategy" but it "was not a meeting about a particular capability".

Ahead of the meeting, sources said Starmer intended to convince Biden of his plan to send British Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine so it can attack targets further into Russia. Now the Labor leader believes that the conversation will continue at the UN General Assembly next week with "a wider group of individuals".

Vladimir Putin earlier this week threatened NATO with war if Ukraine is allowed to use long-range weapons against targets inside Russia.

Medvedev: Enough weapons to wipe out Kyiv

Russia has enough conventional weapons to lend Ukraine's capital Kyiv, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the Russian Security Council, said in a statement on Telegram.

According to Medvedev, Russia would already have formal reasons to use nuclear weapons due to Ukraine's offensive in Russian Kursk, but believes that it is not necessary. Instead, Russia can use "new weapons technology" to turn the city into a "big melted spot".

Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin warned NATO of the consequences of providing long-range weapons to Ukraine.

During the night, Ukraine was attacked by more than 70 Russian drones, most of which were shot down, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to Reuters. The attacks are said to have taken place against Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson and Odesa.

At the same time, Zelenskyy repeats his appeal that Ukraine needs more air defenses.

- We are working on this with all our partners, he says on Telegram.

Russia, for its part, claims to have shot down close to twenty Ukrainian drones in Belgorod and Kursk.
