The election in the United States The electoral movement

Analysis: The Middle East could be the surprise of the election again

Despite the White House proving unable to control Israel, this year's US elections could affect the Middle East crisis in unpredictable ways, writes Julian Borger in an analysis for The Guardian.

He writes that Kamala Harris has not distanced herself from Joe Biden's handling and that it risks being tough for her to win support from the large Arab-American voter group in Michigan. If she loses the key state, the road to the White House will be much more complicated, writes Borger.

"It could be the fateful October surprise of this election".

Sky News Yalda Hakim writes that Donald Trump is unpredictable and that no one knows for sure whether Trump will support or try to rein in Israel. Kamala Harris will probably continue on the beaten path, with warnings against Israel but continued military and financial support, writes Hakim.

She writes that Iran was involved when the term "October surprise" was coined in 1980. Then challenger Ronald Reagan pretended that a late deal on the release of American hostages in Iran would give Jimmy Carter the victory.

"44 years later, and less than a month until election day, Iran and the Middle East can deliver yet another surprise".

Trump warns Detroit: The whole United States can become like your city

Donald Trump promises car manufacturers in Detroit in the key state of Michigan a brighter future if he wins the election in November, writes The Detroit News. In a speech to business leaders in the city on Thursday, Trump said he wants to make auto loan interest fully tax-deductible — something that would save the industry from a "nightmare."

The New York Times describes it as one of the former president's most important proposals in the election campaign.

Trump also took the opportunity to upset the city's leaders by using it as an example of what happens if Kamala Harris wins.

- The whole country will be like Detroit.

Mike Duggan, mayor of the Democratic stronghold, fired back in a post on Instagram where he wrote that homicide rates are down and that the population is increasing for the first time in over 50 years.

"Detroit has done it without any help from Donald Trump".
