Israeli shelling against UN positions in Lebanon - information on several casualties

There is new information on Friday that Israel shelled a UN position in southern Lebanon, reports Reuters. Two people are said to have been injured.

The split between the UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Israeli Defense Forces has increased in recent days. Yesterday, the UN's Jean-Pierre Lacroix said in the Security Council that the risks for the peacekeepers are increasing.

The statement came after UN forces accused Israel of "deliberately" firing on its positions and wounding two Indonesian staff. UNIFIL has called the attacks "a serious violation of international law".

Israel says it has urged UN forces in the area to stick to "its protected areas".

Andrea Tenenti, spokesperson for the UN peacekeeping forces, says that UNIFIL will remain until it becomes impossible to operate.

- We are here because the Security Council has asked us to be.
