Progressive Abdul el-Sayed wins Michigan primary

Progressive Senate candidate Abdul el-Sayed wins the Democratic primary in Michigan, several media outlets estimate.

“We have a responsibility to come together, and we will do that. We will unite to take back this country,” el-Sayed said at a press conference.

He thus defeats the more moderate Haley Stevens, who, according to el-Sayed’s campaign team, has called to concede her defeat.

The campaign has focused on widespread health insurance, ending military aid to Israel and reforming the campaign finance system.

In November, el-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in the midterm elections. Democrats see the Michigan election as crucial to turning the Senate upside down this fall.

The progressive phalanx within the Democrats picked up several victories in the many primaries in the US last night, but they did not take everything.

In Missouri, moderate Wesley Bell won his second nomination for the House of Representatives in a row. He had been challenged by the more progressive Cori Bush, the same candidate he supported in the 2024 election.

Voter Sandra Milbrandt, 58, is one of those who voted for Bell.

– We had Cori Bush before and then a lot of things went wrong. Wesley Bell has done a good job, so it would have been strange not to keep him, she says.
