Cuba: Power restored after nationwide blackout

The Cuban power grid has been restored after a 36-hour blackout that affected the entire island nation, AFP reports.

It is the sixth nationwide blackout this year, but minor outages are more or less constant.

“This is the new normal. The system crashes, it gets back online, and it crashes again,” says Cuban resident Carlos Garcia.

Late Monday night, Havana residents took to their windows and balconies to clap and bang pots in protest against the constant power shortage.

Cuba’s energy crisis has worsened since the beginning of the year, when the United States imposed an oil embargo on the country.

Ships sunk in attack in the Red Sea

A merchant ship has capsized and sunk in the Red Sea after being hit by a projectile.

It is said to be an Indian merchant ship that was attacked near Yemeni waters. All 14 crew members have been rescued by the Yemeni coast guard, Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on X.

"India strongly condemns this unprovoked attack," he wrote.

Of the 14 crew members, 13 are said to be Indians.

Yemen's internationally recognized government accuses the Houthi movement of being behind the attack, AFP reports. The Houthis have previously claimed attacks in the Red Sea. 

Volcano eruption in Guatemala - hundreds flee their homes

The Fuego volcano in Guatemala has erupted, with lava flows and kilometer-high ash plumes, AFP reports.

Local authorities have issued a red alert, and hundreds of people living nearby have had to evacuate.

– We are used to the volcano always being active, but this time it was just too much, says local resident

Swedish multi-million fraudster arrested in Thailand

A Swedish woman who was wanted internationally has been arrested in Phuket, Thailand, reports the Thai Examiner.

The woman is suspected of being involved in a multi-million fraud linked to a call center with more than 14 accomplices. The gang is suspected of having swindled the equivalent of around 17 million kronor or 60 million Thai baht.

The arrest reportedly took place after police investigated the call center since the beginning of 2022. The investigation continued until Swedish authorities uncovered the network, according to the Thai Examiner. The woman, who has been wanted via Interpol, is now to be deported to Sweden.
