Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced today that Sweden will sharply increase defense spending, to two percent of GDP.

Aftonbladet's Lena Mellin answers five questions about the message.

- Raising defense spending this much will affect us all financially, says Lena Mellin.

Is this a step closer to NATO?

- It is NATO adaptation when it comes to the level of defense spending. If you think long-term, if we want to join NATO, you need to reach these levels. If I remember correctly, we are currently at 1.3-1.4 percent of GDP, which is significantly lower.

- It makes it easier to join the day we have reached this percentage, because then it is already done. We will not have to have a long starting distance to raise defense spending to the level that other NATO members will be at.

Sweden must arm itself militarily and civilly - how should we interpret that?

- It can only be interpreted in one way: The government sees that the troubled security policy situation will persist for a long time and therefore the Swedish ability to defend itself will be greatly strengthened. That's a pretty gloomy message. On the other hand, necessary if one has this belief that it will be very troubling in our part of the world. Then we may have to do a little better than we would do today.

It is election year this year - how big a question will this be in the election campaign?

- It is always difficult to know what will happen in six months. But it does not look like this war will end anytime soon. As it looks now, this will be a very large part of the election campaign, it will certainly be characterized by this extremely important issue.

- It was interesting to hear that Minister of Finance Mikael Damberg was already talking about contingency tax. Raising defense spending this much will affect us all financially, we will have to pay higher taxes or something similar. He also said that it is not the time now to start paying off the national debt.

Magdalena Andersson turned directly to young people and to civil society - how important is she saying now?

- This whole message from these three ministers was that we go back to a situation that was during the Cold War. Higher expenses, a defense that is based on a high participation of conscripts - and it has not existed for quite some time.

These are historic days - in what perspective should we see the war in Ukraine?

- This is the worst crisis in our part of the world since World War II, without bargaining. There have been major changes in the fall of the Soviet Union, and the collapse of the entire Warsaw Pact, but it was a positive change. So this is an extremely serious situation. What the ministers said was that these will be issues for a long time of such a serious nature that the money for defense must be sharply increased, will not be taken out of the existing budget.
