Stoltenberg: "New record" for NATO's military spending
At least 18 NATO countries will spend at least 2 percent of their GDP on defense this year, says NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a press conference ahead of this week's defense ministers' meeting in Brussels.
- It is another new record and six times as much as in 2014, when only three allies reached the goal, says Stoltenberg.
The statement comes just days after Donald Trump's campaign said that countries that do not contribute 2 percent of their budgets will also not be able to expect to be covered by Article 5 if Trump becomes president.
In total, NATO's European member states will spend 280 billion dollars on defense in 2024, according to Stoltenberg.

The charges against George Santos
Democratic politician squeezes Santos congressional seat
Democrat Tom Suozzi won a special local election on Long Island in New York. In doing so, his party usurps Republican George Santos' seat in the US House of Representatives, several media reports.
Suozzi is in the Democratic middle and has taken a tougher view than the party at large on issues related to border policy. Among other things, he has promised to work with the Republicans to fix migration policy, writes the New York Times.
He won against Republican Mazi Pilip, a political newcomer who has been attacked from the Democratic side for his opposition to abortion.
Santos was forced out last year after revelations of lies and financial swindling.

Nikki Haley: It's a fact - Trump says incomprehensible things
Donald Trump's mental health has worsened since she supported his presidency, says his challenger Nikki Haley, according to NBC News.
- We have to see this for what it is. This is the fact: He says things that are incomprehensible.
Haley was the US ambassador to the UN during Trump's time as president. She admits that she supported him during those years, but that she had recurring conversations with the president about the parts of his policies that she did not like.
NBC News describes Haley's attacks on Trump as "the bluntest yet." According to the channel, Haley says that America's voters risk a choice between "a former president who can't do the job, and a current president who can't either."
