The controversial construction plans for a hotel in Belgrade with investments from Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner are being scrapped.
The announcement was made on Monday by a representative from Kushner's company, according to AFP.
The renovation of an old military barracks was to result in a luxury hotel and apartment complex in the Serbian capital, but the plans have been met with fierce opposition and dragged on with accusations of abuse of power and irregularities.
In the capital Belgrade, people have demonstrated against the construction plans and against the country's President Aleksandar Vucic, who was behind the construction, and who has been the subject of widespread popular discontent for months, based on accusations of mismanaged economy and lack of democratic leadership.
Now Kushner's company is withdrawing from the plans.
"Meaningful projects should unite rather than divide, and out of respect for the people of Serbia and the city of Belgrade, we are withdrawing our application and refraining from the project for the time being," the company commented in the Wall Street Journal.
