Biden approved Gaza pier despite warnings

US President Joe Biden approved the plan to deliver supplies to Gaza via an emergency aid pier despite voices within the US government warning of several challenges and risks, the Washington Post reports.

The pier, built by US military engineers, began construction in March this year and has been dogged by accidents and was dismantled over the summer.

The US agency for international development, USAID, points to several "external factors" that made the work difficult, including the safety of US military personnel in a new report.

"Several USAID employees expressed concern" that Biden was focusing more on the pier than on other ways to deliver emergency aid, the newspaper writes.

The Israeli army says in a statement that it carried out "operations to counter terrorism" in the cities of Jenin and Tulkarm.

Over 640 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops and settlers since the war in Gaza began last fall, writes AFP.

The Israel-Hezbollah conflict
The energy supply may be Israel's Achilles heel

The development of the conflict in the Middle East has highlighted Israel's vulnerability when it comes to the country's energy supply, including electricity, writes Politico. The issue has become a priority for the country's security when the conflict involves several countries.

An escalation of the conflict on the border with Lebanon could, for example, have negative consequences on Israel's electricity supply.

- If Hezbollah decides that they will attack power plants and other facilities, it is a big problem, says Chuck Freilich, former national security adviser, to the newspaper.
