Violence against women in India

Protests in India against men's violence - demand resignation of minister

Thousands of protesters in Calcutta, India, marched on Tuesday against the government building to demand the resignation of state minister Mamata Banerjee, reports AFP. The police met the protests with tear gas, water cannons and batons, writes the news agency.

According to a police source to AFP, at least 100 protesters have been arrested.

The protests started after a 31-year-old female doctor was found murdered in the city earlier in August. The case has led to great anger against the insecurity of women in the country, which has previously seen several brutal acts of violence against women in particular. The medical profession has also started strikes to highlight the unsafe working conditions for women.

Anger in India: "My daughter will have a safe life"

In recent weeks, thousands of people have protested against violence against women in Calcutta, India. After a 31-year-old female doctor was found dead during her shift earlier in August, anger has grown against men's violence against women in the country. On Tuesday, thousands marched towards the government building in the city to demand the resignation of minister Mamata Banerjee after the murder.

Student Namita Gosh told AFP that the idea was for the protests to be "peaceful" before they were met with Indian police batons and water cannons.

Last week, thousands of doctors and students took part in a protest in which, among others, colleagues of the 31-year-old doctor participated.

- I could never imagine that something like this could happen to my colleague, says 29-year-old Anita to Al Jazeera.

A female doctor who was there with her eight-year-old daughter tells the television channel:

- I want my daughter to have a safe life. She will grow up and work, perhaps far from home. I need to know she's safe.
