The situation in the West Bank

EU summit wants to see sanctions against Israeli ministers

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell announced on Thursday that he will call on EU member states to support sanctions against several Israeli ministers, the AFP news agency reports.

"I started the process to ask member states if they think it's appropriate to include some Israeli ministers on our sanctions list [who] have had unacceptable hate messages against the Palestinians," Borrell told reporters.

According to the EU's head of foreign affairs, these ministers have had messages that "clearly go against international law and are an invitation to commit war crimes".

Borrell does not name specific ministers, but according to diplomats he is referring to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and the country's Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Both are outspoken people on the country's extreme right.
Analysis: Israel's attacks are an escalation

The new Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank means a serious escalation of the conflict in the region. That's what Middle East correspondent Cecilia Uddén says in an analysis in Sveriges Radio.

She believes that an escalation could benefit Hamas.

- Hamas would have liked to see the war extended to the West Bank, where it is known that there is strong dissatisfaction among Palestinians who live under occupation and martial law, she says.

In Haaretz, Amos Harel writes that the situation in the West Bank is "approaching the boiling point". He believes that if the situation escalates further, the Israeli Defense Forces may reinforce the area with more soldiers.

The scale of the fighting and attacks in the West Bank risks turning the area into the "main stage of the war".

"And all of this is made worse by right-wing politicians insisting on pouring gasoline on the flames," he writes, referring, among other things, to Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's criticized statements about the holy al-Aqsa area.

The EU warns Israel against "expanding" the war from Gaza

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell warns Israel to "expand" the war in Gaza through the attacks on the occupied West Bank. He writes in a statement on X:

"The Israeli major military operation in the occupied West Bank must not be the premise for an escalation of the war from Gaza, including full-scale destruction."

During yesterday, Israel and Hamas stated that ten militants were killed in Israeli attacks in the West Bank. On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces, the IDF, stated that five more terrorists had been killed in connection with the Israeli operation.
