Details: One of Ukraine's new F-16 planes has crashed

One of the six US-made F-16 fighter jets that Ukraine recently received crashed on Monday, a US government source told the Wall Street Journal.

The crash is not believed to have been caused by Russian shelling, but by pilot error, according to the source. The Ukrainian Air Force has not confirmed the information.

President Zelenskyy confirmed on August 4 that the first of a total of 80 promised F-16 planes had arrived in Ukraine and were put into service.

ICC-affiliated Mongolia will receive a visit from Putin on Tuesday

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Mongolia on Tuesday, state Russian news agencies reported, according to Reuters.

Mongolia has signed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This means that the country is obliged to arrest Putin, against whom the court has issued an arrest warrant.

There are no signs that this will happen. According to the Kremlin, Putin was invited by Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khürelsükh to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the victory of Russian and Mongolian forces against Japan in the Battle of Chalchin Gol in 1939.

The EU summit supports Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell calls on Ukraine's allies to lift restrictions that prevent the country from attacking Russia, several media reports. Before today's informal meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, Borrell has met the Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba.

- Ukraine must be able to target the places that Russia is bombing from. Otherwise, the weapons are pointless, he says according to the news agency AP.

At the same time, he condemns Russian attacks on civilian targets and Ukrainian infrastructure.

Kuleba talked about the fact that allies must dare to take tough decisions to give Ukraine the opportunity to defend itself.

- If the decisions are not made, you can complain about yourselves, not about Ukraine, he says.

The top Ukrainian pilot "Moonfish" died in the crash

Top Ukrainian pilot Oleksiy Mes, nicknamed "Moonfish", died when his F-16 crashed on Monday. A Ukrainian military source told CNN.

Mes was buried on Thursday, according to the source, who said the crash occurred as the pilot fought off "the biggest Russian airstrike ever".

Why the plane crashed is unclear. A US government source told the Wall Street Journal that pilot error is believed to be behind it, but that picture is not shared by the Ukrainian military, according to CNN's source.

The crash is a severe setback for Ukraine. Only six F-16s have been delivered, and Mes was one of the few trained pilots. The training can take several years, but Mes only had six months.

- In peacetime, we could have studied the plane more thoroughly, but we don't have time, he told CNN himself last winter.
