The Israel-Hezbollah conflict

Netanyahu gags colleagues - party friend rages

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged ministers and party members in the Likud Party not to appear for any interviews after the night's attacks. Party sources tell Haaretz they suspect Netanyahu wants to avoid loud calls for new attacks on Lebanon.

Parliamentarian Tali Gottlieb from Likud says she does not accept being silenced. On X, she writes that the demand is "crazy" and adds:

"It is time to continue attacking Hezbollah without mercy."

Sky News Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall says voices within Netanyahu's government will "certainly" argue for more attacks on Lebanon, but that Israel faces a trade-off.

Netanyahu at the crisis meeting: "We hurt those who hurt us"

Israel's defense force, the IDF, has shot down thousands of rockets fired by Hezbollah at the northern parts of the country. That's what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said when the security cabinet crisis meeting began in Tel Aviv on Sunday morning, writes the Times of Israel.

- We are determined to do everything to protect our country [...] and continue to follow a simple rule: We hurt those who hurt us.

In a statement on X, Foreign Minister Israel Katz writes that Israel "is not seeking a full-scale war" in the region, but that Israel must protect itself against the "axis of evil" led by Iran.

Overnight, the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group launched "the first phase" of its promised revenge attack on Israel. Sunday's attack on Israel is "finished and complete", Hezbollah announced at 08:00.

Israel has also attacked a wide range of targets in Lebanon.

Hezbollah launches large-scale attack on Israel - IDF attacks thousands of targets

Hezbollah has launched a large-scale drone, robot and rocket attack on Israel in response to the IDF killing of leader Fuad Shukr in late July. According to Hezbollah, over 320 projectiles have been fired. In a statement, the terrorist-labeled Lebanese group stated that Sunday's attacks had ended and that these constituted the "first phase" of revenge.

Shortly before, Israel stated that it carried out "preemptive" strikes against a number of targets in Lebanon during the night. According to IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari, the Israeli airstrikes began when the IDF discovered that Hezbollah was getting ready to launch its robots.

The IDF claims to have carried out thousands of attacks, including against Hezbollah rocket launchers. Most of the rockets fired at Israel were also reportedly shot down, according to the IDF.

Israel's war cabinet has held a crisis meeting during the morning. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has declared a state of emergency in the country for the next 48 hours, writes the Times of Israel.

The AP news agency notes that the attacks create concerns about a larger regional war in the Middle East.
