Ten billion is invested in Russian soldier recruitment

The Russian government plans to invest the equivalent of almost ten billion kroner between 2025 and 2027 on one-off payments to soldiers who sign contracts, writes the ISW think tank in its daily situation update.

This suggests that the Kremlin will continue to attract soldiers to Ukraine with financial incentives as long as the system works, according to ISW.

Currently, the government pays out the equivalent of around SEK 43,500 to soldiers who sign contracts. If this sum is correct, it indicates that the Kremlin plans to recruit around 225,000 soldiers over the next three years.

However, ISW assesses that the sum will have to be increased because the military is finding it increasingly difficult to recruit enough soldiers.

New explosions in Beirut after Israel's warning

At least six explosions were heard in Beirut late Saturday night, according to the BBC's correspondent on the ground. Several media have published images showing how clouds of fire rise towards the sky.

Lebanon's national news agency describes the explosions as "very powerful" and adds that blue light personnel have been dispatched, according to The Guardian.

About an hour earlier, Israel called for the evacuation of several buildings via X-posts from Avichay Adraee, the IDF's Arabic-language media spokesperson.

"You are close to Hezbollah properties and interests, against which the IDF will in the near future begin operations," he wrote, urging residents to immediately move at least 500 meters from the buildings.

Netanyahu on Macron's actions: "Should be ashamed"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has commented on French President Emmanuel Macron's statement that all supplies of weapons that Israel uses in Gaza should be stopped, writes AFP.

Israel is fighting against "barbaric Iranian-led forces" and all civilized countries should stand behind the country in this fight, according to Netanyahu.

"Instead, President Macron and other leaders in the West are now calling for an arms embargo against Israel. They should be ashamed," he says, according to a statement from the presidential office.

Diplomat warns of a new refugee crisis in Europe

1.2 million people are refugees in Lebanon, and the situation in the country could lead to a new refugee crisis in Europe. This is what the Norwegian diplomat Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, tells TV4 Nyheterna.

- Some make it to Syria, but many will go to the Mediterranean. So if Europe wants to avoid a new million people fleeing across the Mediterranean, it must invest much more in aid in Lebanon, he says.

Over 160,000 Lebanese have fled to Syria, but now the main escape route has been destroyed in an Israeli airstrike. The fighting and the economic crisis have made the refugees' conditions "absolutely terrible", according to Egeland.
