The Russian invasion The outside world's response

Clear: Frozen Russian money must go to Ukraine

The EU Parliament clearly and unequivocally says yes to the EU's latest support for Ukraine, writes Reuters. The decision to lend up to 35 billion euros - almost 400 billion kroner - to Ukraine was approved with 518 yes votes against 56 no votes and 61 abstentions.

The money is to be secured using the multibillion-dollar Russian central bank assets frozen in the EU since Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Now it remains for the EU countries to agree to extend the freezing period for the money by 36 months at a time instead of the normal six months. That question will only be raised after the US presidential election.

Zelenskyi: Peace talks with Putin depend on US elections

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the future of peace talks with Russia depends on who wins the US presidential election next month, AFP reports.

During an informal press briefing, he says he believes the Kremlin will look at what the US will do for policy. Based on conversations with both candidates, Zelensky believes they will quickly show their stance.

Since before, Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about US support for Kyiv, but Zelenskyj also says that he had "good meetings" with both candidates.

Russia rages against the EU's decision: "Economic crime"

Russia is furious that the EU has decided to use the proceeds from Russian frozen assets to finance Ukraine's defense and reconstruction. This is reported by state Russian media according to Reuters.

Russia's ambassador to the EU, Kirill Logvinov, accuses the Union of committing "economic crimes on a global scale".

On Monday, the EU Parliament decided by a wide majority to grant a loan of almost SEK 400 billion to Ukraine. The loan is to be repaid using the proceeds from Russian frozen assets.
