Political situation in Moldov

Moldova votes yes to the EU - a margin of 13,000 votes

It was a real shocker, but Moldova has voted yes by the smallest possible margin to begin the process of joining the EU, reports several media. With basically all votes counted, the yes side wins with 50.4 percent, which means an advantage of around 13 000 votes.

The result is seen as a surprise as many thought in advance that the yes side would win big.

- I am ashamed of this result, says Chisinau resident Daniel to the independent Moscow Times.

He voted for EU membership and hoped the result would be more convincing. He believes many voted no to show their displeasure with the pro-EU incumbent President Maia Sandu.

Independent observers, and President Sandu, have accused Russia of trying to influence the election.

Russia denies the accusations.
EU: Unprecedented influence from Russia in the election

The EU states that Moldova's referendum on joining the Union and the presidential election were marred by threats and interference from Russia, AFP reports.

EU spokesman Peter Stano said on Monday that the vote took place amid "unprecedented interference and intimidation by Russia and its proxies".

The Yes side, which voted to write the goal of EU membership into Moldova's constitution, appeared on Monday to have won by a very narrow margin. The pro-EU president Maia Sandu has also accused Russia of influencing the election.
